STUDY CLUB: ADVANCED ORTHODONTICS FOR THE GENERAL PRACTITIONER

General dentists who have taken a basic orthodontic course, or who are recent graduates of UBC, or who have had exposure since graduation to fixed appliance principles and practice are eligible to join this advanced group.
This course provides detailed instruction in diagnosis, treatment planning and specifics of treatment procedures for general practitioners who already have some familiarity with orthodontic procedures. It is emphasized that these sessions provide practical experience, on an ongoing basis, with the practitioner's own patients. This course is not limited to theoretical concepts and laboratory procedures. Case presentations and discussions on treatment planning will be held at each session and will supplement clinical treatment of patients.
BENJAMIN PLISKA, DDS, MSC, FRCD(C) is Assistant Professor of the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry and maintains a private practice in Vancouver as a certified specialist in Orthodontics. Dr. Pliska is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario School of Dentistry, and obtained his Certificate in Orthodontics and Master's Degree in Dentistry from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Pliska lectures both locally and internationally on his research interests, which include airway imaging and sleep medicine.
Siddharth (Sid) Vora, BDS, MSD, PhD, is currently an Assistant Professor of the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry. He obtained his dental surgery degree from the University of Mumbai, India, in 2002; a Doctor of Philosophy (Oral Biology) in 2009 from Boston University; and a Master of Science in Dentistry and a Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle in 2012. Dr. Vora was a faculty member at UW. He was also a senior Fellow at Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute.

New members are always welcome! Dr. Shuler's study club starts in October and meets once a month.
This study club will guide dental professionals to develop an approach to recognize and manage oral soft tissue changes that can be incorporated into their daily clinical practice. The group will examine case studies of oral soft and hard tissue lesions that have been seen in dental clinical settings. Each case will be reviewed with respect to the process of recognizing the tissue change and establishing the process for moving to a final diagnosis. Participants in the course will be encouraged to bring examples from their own private practices and all cases reviewed will have been initially identified in a general dental practice.
CHARLES SHULER, , BSc, DMD, PhD, Professor, UBC was the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of British Columbia for ten years, finishing his second five-year term June 30, 2017. He is now a professor of oral pathology in the Department of Oral Biological and Medical Sciences at UBC Dentistry and teaching oral pathology/medicine. Prior to being appointed at UBC he was a faculty member at the University of Southern California for 18 years. At USC he served as the Director of the University of Southern California Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology holding an endowed chair position as the George and Mary Lou Boone Chair Professor of Craniofacial Molecular Biology. He also served as the Director of the Graduate Program in Craniofacial Biology and the Associate Dean for Student and Academic Affairs at the USC School of Dentistry. Dr. Shuler received his B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, his D.M.D. from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, his Ph.D. in Pathology from the University of Chicago and his Oral Pathology education at the University of Minnesota and the Royal Dental College Copenhagen Denmark. He has been active in assessing and managing clinical oral pathology patients with soft and hard tissue lesions. He has had an active research program funded by national granting agencies that focused on evaluating the molecular regulation of the soft and hard tissues of the secondary palate to better understand the etiology of craniofacial birth defects and pathologic changes of the tissues

He obtained his Doctorate of Medicine degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City as part of his 6-year oral and maxillofacial residency training in the same hospital. He is currently the Department Head of Dentistry and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Lions Gate hospital in North Vancouver and Assistant Clinical Professor at UBC Dentistry. Dr. Sadeghi lectures nationally and internationally on all aspects of Implant Surgery and has private practices in Vancouver, North Vancouver and Port Coquitlam, BC.
KEVIN AMINZADEH, BSC (Pharmacy), DDS, MS, FRCD(C), Specialist in Prosthodontics is a board certified Prosthodontist. He had a long dentistry career prior to attending the University of Michigan for his Dental Specialty degree. He is a key opinion leader in the field of implant and microscope enhanced dentistry and an international speaker on Implant and Esthetic Prosthodontics. AVIV OUANOUNOU, BSC, MSC, DDS, FICO, FICD, FACD, is an associate professor of pharmacology and Preventive entistry at the faculty of dentistry, University of Toronto. He received both his DDS and MSc at the University of Toronto. He teaches pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry to undergraduate and graduate students and is also a clinical
instructor and Treatment Plan Coordinator in the University clinics. Dr. Ouanounou won numerous teaching awards including wining "Best Teacher of the Year Award" three times: in 2013, 2015 and in 2019. Also, Dr. Ouanounou is the recipient of the 2014-2015 prestigious Dr. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award for excellence in teaching at the University of Toronto and is the 2018-2019 Recipient of the W.W. Dr. Wang teaches both didactic and clinical Endodontics to predoctoral and postdoctoral students, and Cellular and Molecular Biology to graduate students. Dr. Wang's research focuses on pulpal & periapical inflammation and autophagy in human diseases with the ultimate goal to develop new strategies in endodontic therapy and promote oral health. Dr. Wang serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Journal of Endodontics, the official journal of American Association of Endodontists (AAE), and the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee of AAE. Dr. Wang maintains private practice in Dallas, TX. He was named one of D Magazine's Best Dentists in Endodontics for 2021.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a relatively common disease with serious health consequences in both children and adults. This presentation will review the complex pathophysiology of sleep disordered breathing and review current treatment strategies. The relationship between sleep disordered breathing and craniofacial growth and development will be examined, as well as the current evidence related to CBCT imaging and orthodontic treatment effects on obstructive sleep apnea and the airway. For adults, oral appliances have become an accepted first line of treatment for a wide range of patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. This presentation will also discuss the latest evidence regarding the effectiveness of oral appliance treatment of OSA, as well as review the management of the most common side effects.

This course will review ways to reduce the likelihood that a medical emergency will occur by teaching medical history evaluation, vital sign assessment and managing the phobic patient. DAVID ISEN, BSC, DDS Dr. Isen's dental clinic in Toronto, Sleep For Dentistry, is anesthesia-based, treating patients who require intravenous sedation or advanced techniques in local anaesthesia. Many of these people have special medical needs or are dental phobic. David has given over 400 presentations around the world on topics related to the management of medical emergencies in healthcare settings, local anesthesia for dentistry and the use of sedation in dentistry. He has lectured for many university continuing education programs, dental societies and conventions. He is the author of numerous articles, has peer-reviewed papers for a variety of dental journals and as well has acted as a consultant for dental and pharmaceutical companies.

MASTERING ADULT MINIMAL SEDATION: INHALATION AND ORAL SEDATION IN DENTISTRY
December 2 - 4, 2022
This hands-on course offers instruction in all aspects of adult minimal sedation to include nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation and oral sedation, as well as effective methods in dealing with anxiety control in general practice. Participants will learn various techniques and will have the opportunity to try several types of nitrous oxide and oxygen delivery units. The three day course satisfies the requirements for state or provincial dental boards or colleges who require 21 hours of continuing education to certify for combined inhalation and oral adult minimal sedation. The two day course is designed to achieve certification in nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation sedation, with 14 hours of continuing education.
JASON H. GOODCHILD, DMD received his undergraduate degree from Dickson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He went on to receive his dental training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (Philadelphia, PA). He is currently the Vice President of Clinical Affairs at Premier Dental Products Company (Plymouth Meeting, PA) involved in developing and educating dentists on new materials and techniques to improve clinical practice. He is also Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Creighton University School of Dentistry (Omaha, NE), and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (Newark, NJ). Dr. Goodchild has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and lectures internationally on the topics of treatment planning, treatment of medical complex dental patients, restorative dentistry, pharmacology, emergency medicine in dentistry, enteral sedation dentistry, and dental photography. He has been an invited speaker for the Academy of General Dentistry and American Association of Dental Examiners. He is a reviewer for the Journal of the American Dental Association, General Dentistry, Compendium, and Quintessence International. Dr. Goodchild maintains a private general dental practice in Havertown, PA.
MARK DONALDSON, BSP, RPH, ACPR, PHARMD, FASHP, FACHE received his baccalaureate degree from the University of British Columbia and his Doctorate in Clinical Pharmacy from the University of Washington. He completed a residency at Vancouver General Hospital, and has practiced as a clinical pharmacy specialist, clinical coordinator and director of pharmacy services at many healthcare organizations in both Canada and the United States. He is currently Associate Principal of Clinical Pharmacy for Vizient's Advisory Solutions, and lives in Whitefish, Montana. Dr. Donaldson is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Montana and Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Dentistry at the OHSU. He has lectured internationally to both dental and medical practitioners and has spent the last 26 years focusing on dental pharmacology and dental therapeutics, and is a leader in the field. Dr. Donaldson has published numerous peer-reviewed works and textbook chapters. He serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of the American Dental Association, and is a reviewer for over ten other different journals. He is board certified in healthcare management and is the Past-President and Regent of the American College of Healthcare Executives' Montana Chapter. Dr. Donaldson is the 2016 recipient of the AGD's Dr. Thaddeus V. Weclew Award and in 2019 he was conferred by the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) with the, "Special Friend of Canadian Dentistry Award." This award is given to an individual outside of the dental profession in appreciation for exemplary support or service to the profession as a whole.

JOHN WEST, DDS, MSD, D is the founder and director of the Center for Endodontics and continues to be recognized as one of the world's premier educators in clinical and interdisciplinary endodontics. John West received his DDS from the University of Washington in 1971 where he is an Affiliate Associate Professor. He received his MSD in endodontics at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine in 1975 where he is a clinical instructor and has been awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. West has presented unrivaled endodontic continuing education across the world while maintaining a private practice in Tacoma, Washington. He co-authored Obturation of the Radicular Space with Dr. John Ingle in Ingle's 1994 and 2002 editions of Endodontics and was senior author of Cleaning and Shaping the Root Canal System in Cohen and Burns 1994 and 1998 Pathways of the Pulp. He has authored Endodontic Predictability in Dr. Michael Cohen's 2008 Quintessence text Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning: Principles, Design, Implementation, and Michael Cohen's 2010 Quintessence text Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning Volume II: Comprehensive Case Studies and is lead author of Esthetic Management of Endodontically Treated Teeth in Ronald Goldstein's 2016 third edition of Esthetics in Dentistry. SURGICAL CROWN LENGTHENING FOR GENERAL PRACTITIONERS

Fractured teeth with sufficient root support can often be rescued by a combination of surgical crown lengthening and prosthodontic rehabilitation. Treated anterior teeth for better esthetics also often requires surgical crown lengthening. The focus of this lecture and hands-on program is to provide general practitioners the necessary background information and practical training using animal mandibles to perform surgical crown lengthening procedure.
HANNU LARJAVA, DDS, PHD, DIPPERIO graduated from the University of Turku, Finland,in 1978 (DDS) and earned his PhD from the same institution in 1984. He then specialized in periodontics (1987) and moved to the NIH for a postdoctoral fellowship. In 1988, Dr. Larjava was invited to the University of Alabama in Birmingham where he spent 1.5 years as an Associate Professor performing research work and clinical teaching. After a short time in Finland, Dr. Larjava was appointed as the Chair, Division of Periodontics at the University of British Columbia in 1993 which position he currently retains. He has also served for many years as the Director and Acting Director of Graduate Periodontics. Currently, he is also the Head of Oral Biological and Medical Sciences department. Dr. Larjava has an active research interest in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and oral wound healing supported for many years through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the National Institutes of Health, Foundations and other sources. He has published over 180 publications in peer-reviewed international journals. Dr. Larjava has lectured nationally and internationally in numerous CE courses and conferences.
RANA TARZEMANY, DDS, PHD, DIP. PERIO, FRCD(C), DABP received her dental degree (DDS) from Azad Tehran Dental School, and completed her graduate studies in the field of combined PhD and Diploma in Periodontics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She is a certified periodontist, a Fellow of Royal College of Dentists of Canada FRCD(C), and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery (DABP). Currently, she serves as an Assistant Professor of Teaching and the Director of the Graduate Periodontics Program at UBC Faculty of Dentistry. She practices as an associate periodontist in Vancouver. In her research, which centers around the molecular mechanisms of wound healing and scar formation, she has received outstanding recognition and academic achievements. Rana is the recipient of numerous prestigious national and international awards including in 2015, the highly prestigious international Volpe Competition that recognizes the best periodontal research from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. She was the first Canadian to win this competition.
